Core vocabulary refers to the small number of words that make up 80% of what we say. These words can be taught and reinforced in a variety of activities and allow for quick and easy 2 and 3 word combinations.

For example: stop, go, get, more, turn, mine, on, of, up, down, that allow a beginner communicator to take control of their environment, have their needs met and interact socially.

Core vocabulary is so powerful because it allows communicators to express a wide variety of concepts with a very small number of words.

Fringe words can be provided separately as a single communication board (with visuals) based on a theme and can then be used for a specific learning activity in conjunction with the core words.

Communication Boards can be grouped by subject or theme eg. Learning about space - sun, moon, planets, satellite, space suit, astronaut, etc. or words found in a specific book or film/TV series/  Here is an example of a communication board about Dr Who.

This very targeted vocabularly could then be extended into other activities. eg Sentence building using Clicker Sentences or handwriting practice using School Writing.
